Remington 760 Serial Numbers

  1. Need some help dating this 760. The date code is covered by the soldered on claw mounts. These are marked Zehner as is the B Nickel scope. H&H Zehner was active post WW2 and did custom work for GI’s stationed in Germany in the 50’s and 60’s. So I’m guessing in that range. Serial # 669. but I.

Remington Dates of
Manufacture

The following serial number
information is for
Remingtion firearms
manufactured after 1921

I found another Model 760 rifle this PM at an out-of-state store & am wondering if someone has a 'date of manufacture list' by serial number. (The barrel was, I believe, changed out when it was rebored/rechambered by JES to 9.3x62mm & thus the 'barrel code' is useless for 'dating' the rifle.). The Remington Society of America An organization dedicated to the collection and study of Remington firearms, ammunition and history.

Remingtons manufactured after 1921
have a code located on the left side of the barrel
near the frame that identifies the year and month of
manufacture. The following letters correspond to the
months of the year, for example B=January, L= February
and so on:

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer’s rifle.

Remington 760 Serial Numbers Lookup

Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.
